zane's first day.

Zane went to his first day of kindergarten today! And it was his first time riding the school bus. They only bus him home, since he is in private school, but he seemed to enjoy both school and the bus.

He has not told us much about school (no big surprise!) but seemed to have a good time and meet some new cool kids.

Not much more that we could ask for, really.

tractor ride.

When we go to my aunt and uncle's farm, Zane always hopes for a tractor ride, and lucky him, gets one. This time we went to visit and Stone was up for it too. So both boys got to ride in the tractor and Zane got to steer! They were so excited and look forward to many more rides in the future. Thanks Uncle Jim!

cherry upside down chocolate cake

With my pregnancy I have cut sugar out of my diet. I am allowed no more than 2 fruits a day and on special occasions a little low sugar treat.

For my needs, my dear friend Marcy has made up a recipe. It is in the oven right now. SO I want to share the link with you so you can find the recipe yourself and try it. I did modify it by using tart cherries instead of bing, only because I had tart cherries on hand. You can find the recipe here.

Hope you enjoy this as much as I think I will!

girl?....

So, we are expecting a third child in September, and this child is supposedly a girl. Zane is VERY excited about it and wants a sister, so good news that it is supposed to be a girl. Hope she actually comes out a girl and is not one of those that is a "surprise, it's a boy!"

Anyway, not sure if I will change the blog title or not. Kids will be kids, maybe?

Let's just hope the kids continue to get along and I figure out how to parent 3 children. Oh my! Should be interesting!

soccer camp

Zane is in soccer camp this week. Nothing super long, just 1.5 hours a day for 5 days. He is having a blast, and now wants to join a soccer team for this fall. Wouldn't you know that you have to sign up for soccer in the spring?! Unreal. It's like preschool in a large city. You have to do it before you conceive...

I'm sure we will find a place where he can join a team. There have to be other slacker parents out there like me and people that want to profit from them. :)

chocolate zucchini cupcakes

So, we did end up making chocolate zucchini cupcakes of which I quickly devoured most. The boys each had one, outside as they were rather moist an crumby, causing for disaster at clean up time.

I unfortunately forgot to take pictures, but there are pics available at the link to the recipe, and they looked pretty much the same. I did substitute spelt flour for wheat flour, but otherwise I followed her instructions to a T.

You can find the recipe here.

The one thing I would have done is forgo the cinnamon and allspice. Though it did lend a nice flavor, I just would have preferred the muffins without it. I think cinnamon and/or allspice and chocolate are kind of a strange combo. I just really wanted luscious rich chocolate, which these were, with the exception of the spices. The boys loved them as well and no one could tell there was zucchini in them. I would maybe add a little more zucchini, only to get some more veggies into my kids, though zucchini is the one veggie they BOTH like cooked in olive oil with onions, sea salt and pepper.

Hope you have some fun making something with your kids if you have them. Nothing like watching their excitement at having made something that they can eat and share with their friends and family. Such fun!

farm lettuce.

The boys and I were gone for most of June. When we returned, we had been getting deliveries from the farm (a CSA, otherwise known as community supported agriculture) the whole time. Dave or neighbors took care of it while we were gone. They ate some of it, and the rest of it they gave back to me.

Zane has decided he likes farm lettuce better than store bought. He says it is the best. Unfortunately we missed the farm spinach while we were gone, but should get more as fall comes around with a little cooler weather. Zane should love that as he is a big fan of spinach.

This week we have a delivery of zucchini and yellow squash. Zane and I will make either zucchini bread or cake. Should be fun! He of course wants cake, but I think he just does not realize how good zucchini bread is. Whichever we decide to make, if it turns out great, we'll post a pic and the recipe later.
